This map shows the route as far as Outlaw Cabin.
This long, steep, switchbacking trail eventually leads to Lone Peak. After about 4 miles you pass through a mahogany forest, then enter gorgeous pine forest complete with a spring (5 miles up) and the Outlaw Cabin.
Steepness: Steep.
Notable Features: Mahogany forest, pine forest, spring, Outlaw Cabin, nice valley views and great views of Little Willow, Lone Peak and others after 5+ miles.
Amenities: Restroom at the trailhead.
Fees: None.
When to go: Spring, fall, or very early morning summer - prepare to bake in the heat!
Directions: Park at the Orson Smith Trailhead park at approximately 12700 S Highland Drive and start up the trail behind the rest room. When you reach the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, head north a little ways till you see the sign marked Cherry Canyon Logging Trail.
Mountains, lakes and other features accessed: Lone Peak, Outlaw Cabin.
Connecting & cross trails: After 5 miles and a relatively flat ridge, a trail to the right goes to Draper Ridge, which is probably a better approach to Lone Peak since you don't have to lose, then regain elevation later. There's also a trail that goes north into Willow Canyon.
