A variation from the Dry Canyon or Battle Creek Canyon approach to the Baldy summit is to leave the Dry Canyon trail and head straight up the Southwest Ridge.
It's a fairly steep but relatively good trail, which cuts north immediately after the normal Dry Canyon trail climbs through the Great Blue Gate (the massive limestone cliffs above the trailhead), up through the bowl, through a lovely flat section with grasses and small meadows, and just as it starts along the hillside above the Dry Canyon bottom.
The route above was recorded during a rescue of an exhausted hiker and so doesn't reach quite to the summit. Also note that this route takes the "old" way to the ridge from before the trail became better developed. Continue up-canyon a bit farther and you'll see the obvious trail on your left.
Once you reach the "top," you're at a false summit. Continue around to the true summit and take the regular trail along the ridge east to the saddle and down.
